Stage 1
An introduction to the exciting world of reading and writing. 60 words are introduced gradually through the 10 Big Books.
The first book introduces the four main characters: Henry, Honor, Charlie and Darcy. Constant repetition and consistency of text and pictures ensures that the child will begin to develop visual memory for sightwords. The sightwords themselves include many keywords as needed for the Reception Year at school.
The words are reinforced through word and phrase cards which repeat the new vocabulary and build on words learned in previous weeks.
By the end of Stage 1, the child should recognise many of the 60 key words by sight, will know the conventions of handling a book and will be confident and motivated to read.
One of the most thrilling experiences of our trialling has been to hear a child shout in delight I can read!
Hand control and hand/eye co-ordination, prerequisites to writing, will also be developing through letter sheets and/pr craft activities. One basic ssound and letter is introduced every week in a carefully structured way.
Books are availabale to take home and share with your child all the work achieved during the classes.
Stage 2
A further 10 books continues the stories of the main characters, especially Henry, with whom readers really identify! 60 more words are introduced gradually, with reinforcement of those learned in Stage 1. In this stage the child is encouraged to look for meaning when encountering a new word, to look at the picture and to look at the initial letter. The craft activities introduce 10 more basic sounds and offer new opportunities for parent and child to work together to make the object. Ten new letter sheets are provided as work at home to consolidate learning.
